When you purchase your martial arts uniforms, be sure to try it on to ensure a good fit, or if you are ordering online, take your measurements and use the online sizing chart as a guideline. Keep in mind that your first uniform will not be your last, and so it isn’t important to invest money in the highest quality right away. The important thing from the beginning is to make sure that you have a uniform that conforms to the standards of your discipline and dojo.
What is the Intended Use?
This may sound like a dumb question at first but hear me out for a minute. It’s obvious that you intend to use your new martial arts uniform to work out/train in. That’s a given. But, if your training hall is like mine it is old and lacks adequate air conditioning and heating. In fact, last year we didn’t even have air conditioning. As you may have guessed, the last thing I wanted to be wearing in that oven was a heavy weight canvas uniform. So training environment has a lot to do with the weight of the martial arts uniform that you buy.
If youre discipline is karate, than your uniform will be a karategi or gi. Most are made out of canvas and are meant to be lightweight and durable. The gi developed from the Judo uniform, which s slightly heavier and more fitted. Make sure that the uniform you choose complies wit the requirements of your school, since some dojos have begun to move away from the traditional white uniform in order to distinguish themselves. There may also be special patches or special arm bands or belts that are required.
Hand Wash with Mild Soap
When washing your gi, you should never use chlorine bleach to help get it clean. While bleach will help get it clean, it will also damage the material and cause the stitching to come apart. Rather than using bleach to clean your gi, you should hand wash your gi with mild soap. If you choose to wash the gi with other clothes, it is actually best to wash with other items, such as towels. This way, the friction created from modern day washing machines will be reduced. After allowing the machine to wash the gi for about 20 minutes, you might also want to turn off the machine in order to allow it to soak for 20 minutes before starting it back up again and allowing it to complete the cycle.
Perhaps the most dramatic martial arts uniform is the one used in kendo. Kendo is the Japanese martial art of sword fighting. Its clothing includes long, full pants that almost appear to be a skirt, a top similar to the one worn in karate and bagu, specifically designed protective armor. A set of bagu consists of a facemask, shoulder protectors, a torso protector, gauntlets, leg protectors, a groin protector and sometimes shin protectors. A kendo fighter in full regalia is a very intimidating sight.
