In March 2022, the All Japan Judo Federation cancelled its prestigious nationwide tournament for youngsters aged 10-12, saying that young people are being pressed “too difficult” in training. The action highlights the steep decline in the number of young participants of the Japanese home-grown martial art. Experts claim kids are being repelled by the sport’s “brutal win-at-all prices” attitude, corporal punishment as well as stress to shed weight.
